YOUNG MEN OF THE “NATION”
My family was in the vanguard among the founding members of the Nation of Islam, a hybrid of black nationalism and Sunni Islam. They were and still are known among members of the “Nation” as the “pioneers.” The main agent of spreading the faith was my grandfather Elijah Muhammad.
Muslims are not new arrivals in this country. But if you look at the discourse about Muslims in the current political and cultural spheres, you might have the impression that the religion of Islam is something new, and threatening. “We are all immigrants,” is often repeated in this climate of ignorance and ethnic and racial hostilities.
